President Joe Biden characterized his decision to withdraw from the reelection campaign as a “defense of democracy.”In a Wednesday night speech from the Oval Office,

Biden stated.

Being employed by the American people gives me joy and strength. It is not about me, though, this holy work of perfecting our unity. It pertains to you. your relatives. The futures you have. “We the People” is the subject.

An American president rarely steps down from office willingly, either because of the constraints of the Constitution or the electorate’s forceful rejection. Having given in to intense pressure from inside his own party to withdraw as a contender, Biden justified his decision as one taken with the sake of the country in mind and urged citizens to stand with him in defending Democratic principles.

Speaking in a low voice and occasionally in a halting manner, Biden stated, I have determined the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation.Our country can best be united in that way.

After a disastrous debate performance in late June that left members of his party calling for him to step off the campaign trail and allow another candidate to run against Trump, Biden made his speech three days after he withdrew his bid. Many Democrats felt that his halting effort to clean it up and his bumbling debate performance made his path to reelection impossible.
