Following a vote marred by allegations of fraud and abnormalities in the counting process, both Nicolás Maduro, the president of Venezuela, and his opposition rival declared them the winners on Monday.
According to a statement released by the National Electoral Council (CNE), Maduro received more than 51% of the vote with 80% of the votes counted, surpassing Edmundo González Urrutia, the candidate for the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), who received more than 44% of the vote.
The official results of the presidential election appeared to favor the strongman leader, a view that was questioned by the US and several other world leaders.
As the votes were being counted on Sunday night, allegations of irregularities in the election began to surface. These included the denial of entry to the CNE headquarters for opposition witnesses while the authority was tallying the votes, and the CNE’s purportedly stopping the transfer of data from local polling places to their central location in order to stop more votes from being processed.
Several international organizations have chastised the CNE for its lack of objectivity.
The European Parliament passed a resolution in February accusing the Maduro regime of making changes to the CNE that were “designed to hamper the electoral process and quash any prospect of a return to democracy.” The US Department of State expressed concerns about these “ongoing efforts to remake the composition” of the body last year.
CNN has contacted the CNE, but it has not replied to the accusations made by the opposition.
Leading the opposition, María Corina Machado, stated during a press conference that according to their own records, Edmundo González Urrutia had gotten 70% of the vote as opposed to 30% for Maduro.
Machado declared, “We won, and everyone knows it,” and he added that the opposition will stand up for the truth.
“The entire international community knows what happened in Venezuela and how people voted for change,” she said.
Gonzalez, who was also at the news conference, alleged that rules had been violated during the election.
Chavismo continues
Should he win, Maduro will serve a third consecutive six-year term and carry on with “Chavismo,” the left-leaning populist philosophy named for Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez.
Before his passing in 2013, Hugo Chávez controlled Venezuela for 14 years. Nationalization, the redistribution of the enormous oil wealth of the country to the most disadvantaged and impoverished populations, and a persistent campaign to defend Venezuelan sovereignty against “imperialist” powers characterized his policies.
However, the oil-rich country has just gone through the biggest economic collapse in recorded history during a period of peace. Maduro claims that Venezuela is the victim of a “economic war” and attributes the decline to international sanctions imposed on his government.

Many of the large number of voters who showed up to cast their ballots threatened to flee the nation should Maduro win, citing his threat of violent repression and economic collapse.
During his two years in office, Maduro has already presided over previously unheard-of levels of hardship and emigration from the nation; 8 million Venezuelans have left their homeland due to acute shortages of basic supplies and skyrocketing prices.
